Dental pain is information. Let’s find the source.
Emergency treatment begins by understanding what changed, where it hurts, and whether swelling, trauma, or infection may be involved. Call the office so the team can hear what is happening and help arrange the appropriate visit.
Problems we evaluate urgently.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. An examination helps determine whether a tooth can be restored, needs root canal treatment, requires extraction, or calls for another approach.
Severe Tooth Pain
Persistent, throbbing, pressure-related, or biting pain may indicate decay, inflammation, infection, or a fracture.
Cracked or Broken Teeth
A fracture can range from a damaged cusp to a deep crack affecting the nerve or root.
Lost Crowns or Fillings
A missing restoration can expose weakened or sensitive tooth structure and should be assessed promptly.
Swelling or Infection
Swelling, drainage, fever, or a bad taste can accompany infection and should not be ignored.
Broken Front Teeth
Prompt evaluation helps address discomfort while considering the tooth, gumline, bite, and appearance.
Dental Trauma
Loose, displaced, or knocked-out teeth are time-sensitive and may require immediate stabilization or other care.
Emergency Extractions and Replacement Planning
When a tooth cannot be predictably saved, treatment can address pain and infection first, then consider an implant, bridge, or another replacement when appropriate.
Know when medical help comes first.
Most toothaches, broken teeth, damaged restorations, and localized dental swelling are evaluated by a dentist. Certain symptoms need emergency medical attention.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for life-threatening symptoms. After the medical emergency is stabilized, dental follow-up may still be needed.
Focused care, one clear step at a time.
The exact visit depends on the problem. The goal is to identify the source, relieve urgent symptoms when possible, and explain what is needed next.
Listen & Examine
Review your symptoms, health history, medications, recent dental work, and the event that led to the visit.
Image & Diagnose
Use focused X-rays or other imaging when needed to evaluate the tooth, root, bone, and nearby anatomy.
Relieve & Stabilize
Address pain, infection, sharp edges, loose restorations, or other urgent problems according to the diagnosis.
Plan the Next Step
Review definitive treatment, timing, maintenance, insurance information, and any needed follow-up.

Treat the cause, not just the symptom.
A painful tooth may be cracked, infected, decayed, affected by the bite, or compromised beneath an older restoration. Digital imaging and a careful clinical examination help the team understand what can be preserved and which treatment is expected to provide a dependable result.

This documented case shows why the depth and location of a fracture—not pain alone—determine whether a tooth can be restored.
Emergency extraction with same-day implant placement.
A heavily restored premolar had previously shown structural weakness. When the patient returned with significant pain, evaluation showed that the fracture extended too deeply for the tooth to be predictably rebuilt with a crown.
The non-restorable tooth was removed to address the source of pain. Because the clinical conditions allowed, an implant was placed during the same appointment to begin replacing the tooth.
Same-day implant placement is appropriate only in selected cases. Bone, infection, anatomy, and implant stability are evaluated individually.

Clear answers while you arrange care.
These general answers cannot diagnose your symptoms. Call the office if you are unsure whether your concern needs prompt attention.
Can Nine One Dental see me the same day?
Same-day emergency appointments are available when the schedule allows. Call as early as possible, explain your symptoms, and the team will help determine the most appropriate appointment.
What should I do for a severe toothache?
Call for an evaluation. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gum because it can injure the tissue. Use over-the-counter medication only as directed and only if it is safe for your health and medications.
Can a cracked tooth be saved?
Sometimes. Treatment depends on the crack's depth, location, symptoms, remaining tooth structure, and whether the nerve or root is involved. Some teeth can be restored with a crown or root canal and crown; deeper fractures may make extraction necessary.
What should I do if a crown falls off?
Save the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and call the office. Do not use household glue. The dentist needs to assess the tooth and crown before deciding whether it can be re-cemented or needs replacement.
Is dental swelling an emergency?
Swelling can be associated with infection and should be evaluated promptly. Rapidly spreading swelling, fever with worsening symptoms, or difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical attention.
Will I receive permanent treatment at the emergency visit?
It depends on the diagnosis, available time, and the procedure required. Some problems can be treated during the emergency visit. Others are stabilized first and completed at a follow-up appointment.
Can an implant be placed when a tooth is removed?
In selected cases, an implant can be placed at the extraction visit. Bone, infection, anatomy, and the ability to achieve implant stability all influence that decision. Same-day placement does not always mean the final crown is delivered that day.
Does dental insurance cover emergency treatment?
Coverage varies by plan and by the services performed. The office can help review available PPO benefits and provide treatment information, but the insurance carrier determines payment, limitations, and reimbursement.
