Modern restorative dentistry

Restore a damaged tooth in less time.

A dental crown covers and strengthens a tooth that can no longer be predictably restored with a filling alone. Crowns are often recommended after a tooth cracks or breaks, loses a large filling, develops extensive decay, or becomes structurally weakened.

Traditional crown treatment may involve impressions, a temporary crown, and a return placement visit. With CEREC digital technology, Nine One Dental can complete many ceramic crowns in one appointment at our West Roxbury office.

  • Digital impressions instead of traditional putty molds
  • In-office digital crown design and fabrication
  • No temporary crown for many eligible cases
  • Tooth-colored ceramic restorations designed around your bite

Restore & protect

What does a dental crown do?

A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, covers the visible portion of a damaged tooth. It can restore strength, shape, appearance, and chewing function when a filling alone is no longer enough.

✓

Cracked or Fractured Tooth

Reinforce vulnerable tooth structure before damage progresses.

✓

Large or Failing Filling

Protect a tooth that has too little healthy structure for another filling.

✓

Decay or Root Canal Care

Rebuild a tooth weakened by extensive decay or previous treatment.

✓

Wear, Shape, or Color

Restore function and create a natural shape when clinically appropriate.

✓

Severe Grinding Wear

Rebuild teeth affected by repeated chipping and long-term bite forces.

✓

Old Crown Replacement

Replace a crown that is loose, damaged, worn, or no longer sealing well.

✓

Implant Restoration

Complete a single-tooth implant with a custom implant crown.

✓

Coordinated Smile Repair

Plan several restorations together for consistent form and function.

CEREC same-day crowns

Designed, created, and placed under one roof.

CEREC uses computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing—often called CAD/CAM—to turn a detailed digital model of your tooth into a custom restoration. After the tooth is evaluated and prepared, the crown can be designed on screen and milled from a tooth-colored ceramic block in the office.

Many eligible CEREC crowns can be completed in a single visit. Your dentist will first confirm that this approach and material are appropriate for the tooth, bite, and treatment goals.

01

Digital Scan

A precise 3D scan records the prepared tooth and surrounding bite.

02

Digital Design

The dentist constructs the restoration on screen and customizes its fit, contact, shape, and appearance.

03

In-Office Milling

The CEREC milling unit shapes many restorations from a ceramic block in the West Roxbury office.

04

Final Placement

Your dentist verifies the fit, color, and bite before securely bonding the crown to the tooth.

Your treatment options

Same-day CEREC crown or laboratory-made crown?

The right approach depends on the individual tooth, available materials, your bite, and the complexity of treatment.

Same-day option

CEREC Ceramic Crown

  • Often completed in one appointment
  • Digital scan instead of traditional impressions
  • Designed and milled in the office
  • Usually no temporary crown
  • Tooth-colored ceramic restoration
Complex cases

Laboratory-Made Crown

  • Typically requires more than one appointment
  • Created by an outside dental laboratory
  • A temporary restoration may be needed
  • Additional material options may be available
  • Useful for certain complex restorative cases
Not every tooth is appropriate for a same-day crown. Your dentist will recommend the method expected to provide the most predictable result for your clinical needs.
What to expect

Your dental crown treatment, step by step.

The exact sequence varies with the condition of the tooth and whether the crown is made with CEREC or by a dental laboratory.

01

Examination & Diagnosis

Evaluate the tooth, bite, symptoms, existing dentistry, and digital X-rays when recommended.

02

Tooth Preparation

Remove damaged or decayed material and prepare the tooth to support the crown.

03

Digital Scan

Capture a three-dimensional record of the prepared tooth and surrounding bite.

04

Crown Design

Customize the restoration for fit, function, shape, contacts, and appearance.

05

Fabrication & Placement

Create the restoration in-office or through a dental laboratory, then place it.

06

Final Bite Check

Confirm the fit and bite and complete any needed final adjustments.

Protect your restoration

How to care for a CEREC dental crown.

Ceramic crowns are designed for everyday function, but the natural tooth and gum tissue around the restoration still need consistent care. Good home hygiene and professional follow-up help protect the crown and its foundation.

01

Brush Every Day

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, paying attention to the gumline around the crown.

02

Clean Between Teeth

Floss or use the interdental method recommended by your dental team to remove plaque beside the restoration.

03

Protect Against Excess Force

Avoid biting very hard objects and discuss a night guard if you clench or grind your teeth.

04

Keep Routine Visits

Return for professional cleanings and examinations at the interval recommended for you—often about every six months.

Call if something changes. Contact Nine One Dental if your crown feels loose, your bite feels different, or the tooth or surrounding gum becomes painful or swollen.

Guidance from Dr. Kwon

How to care for your implant crown.

A crown attached to a dental implant needs daily plaque removal around the gumline and the implant restoration. In this video, Dr. Junsoo Kwon explains practical ways to clean the area and why professional monitoring still matters.

  • Brush gently along the crown and gumline every day
  • Use floss or an interdental aid recommended for your restoration
  • Keep preventive visits so the implant, crown, gums, and bite can be checked

These cases show how the amount of remaining tooth structure, previous dental work, grinding forces, function, and appearance shape a crown treatment plan.

Protect what can be preserved.

A crown can reinforce a compromised tooth when enough healthy structure remains. Planning several crowns together can also create a more coordinated bite and appearance when multiple teeth are affected.

Dental crown FAQs

Questions about dental crowns?

A clinical examination is needed to determine whether a filling, crown, root canal, implant, or another treatment is most appropriate.

How do I know whether I need a crown or a filling?
A filling may be appropriate when damage is limited and enough healthy tooth remains. A crown provides more complete coverage when a tooth is extensively restored, cracked, worn, or structurally weakened.
Can Nine One Dental complete my crown in one visit?
Many eligible ceramic crowns can be digitally scanned, designed, milled, and placed in one appointment with CEREC. Complex cases or specific material needs may require laboratory fabrication.
Does getting a dental crown hurt?
The tooth is typically numbed during preparation. Sensitivity after treatment varies. Tell the office if discomfort is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling.
Can a crown protect a cracked tooth?
A crown may reinforce a cracked or weakened tooth when sufficient healthy structure remains. Some deep fractures extend too far for predictable crown treatment, which is why timely evaluation matters.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
Many back teeth benefit from crown coverage after root canal treatment because they can be more vulnerable to fracture. The recommendation depends on the tooth, remaining structure, and bite.
How long does a dental crown last?
There is no guaranteed lifespan. Longevity depends on the underlying tooth, crown material, oral hygiene, bite forces, grinding, diet, and routine dental care.
Does dental insurance cover crowns?
Coverage varies by plan, reason for treatment, frequency limits, and deductible. The team can help review available benefit information and the estimate for your recommended care.
What should I do if my crown feels loose or falls out?
Contact the office promptly. Keep the crown if it has come out, avoid chewing on the area, and do not use household glue. Sudden pain or swelling should be reported when you call.
